Matchroom Boxing supremo Eddie Hearn has lined up a big homecoming fight for Conor Benn once his suspension is finally lifted.

The 27-year-old welterweight from Ilford cruised to a dominant 12-round unanimous points victory over Peter Dobson at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas at the weekend.

It was the first time in his unbeaten 23-fight paid career that the son of legendary two-weight world champion Nigel Benn went the full 12-round distance, as the British world title contender also handed Bronx-based Dobson a first pro loss in 16 contests.

And Benn, who began learning the sport at Vinegar Hill Amateur Boxing Club in Blacktown, Sydney, Australia believes Dobson's gameplan was to survive.

“I was in cruise control,” Benn told DAZN. “I always gun for the first round. If I see something I’ll take it, I don’t miss when I shoot. I took my shots, he (Dobson) was still standing. He was tough but he was in there to survive really. 

“I was a bit disappointed I come out like I said I’ll come out and if he opened up instead of surviving then he would have been in for it.”

After spending the last five months Stateside - including an earlier victory over Rodolfo Orozco in Orlando - Benn is desperate to return home to resume his boxing career.

He has unable to do that since failing two drugs tests prior to his bout with bitter rival Chris Eubank Jr last October. His provisional suspension was lifted by Independent National Anti-Doping Panel but the British Boxing Board of Control and UK Anti-Doping appealed that decision.

Benn hopes to get the matter finally resolved in his favour in a few weeks’ time, adding: “You can always do better, I always try.

“I’ll go back and assess it. There’s no doubt I’ll be disappointed with things - silly right hand I got caught with. But overall this is just more for me, getting back to where I was mentally and it was good being out here, but the dream is fighting back home, that’s the plan.”

Promoter Eddie Hearn, son of former Leyton Orient owner Barry, hinted Eubank Jr, Liam Smith and Kell Brook as Benn’s possible opponents on his UK return but has also not ruled out a world title contest.

“The plan is the biggest fight we’ve got to Box Office in a couple of weeks’ time (the appeal hearing),” he said. 

“Once that’s done we can return to the UK. He can fill any arena, any stadium in the UK. Of course the domestic fights with Chris Eubank Jr, Liam Smith, Kell Brook - we know they’ll fill up anywhere, but we also have a job to try and position him for a world title. 

“Once we get that lingering problem out of his head, which he still has to fight with and people don’t realise that - every time he goes into a ring there’s questions. Is this date coming up and this appeal?

"People refuse to acknowledge he’s won two cases to clear his name. Once that all boxed the mind can be free and he can do what he does best and that’s to fill up an arena in the UK, so let’s get this done in a couple of weeks’ time. We’ll book him April, May. I want to deliver him the biggest fight I can in the UK next.”

Ilford’s Hamzah Sheeraz will be looking to extend his unbeaten 18-fight record when he clashes with Welshman Liam Williams in an intriguing Commonwealth and WBC Silver middleweight match-up at the Copper Box Arena on Saturday.
