Wanstead & Snaresbrook will look to take one step closer to a Lord's final when they host Bexley in the quarter-finals of the ECB National Club Championship on Sunday.
The limited-overs competition started in 1969 and is open to clubs playing in an ECB Premier League, as they battle it out for the chance to play at the Home of Cricket.
The finalists will get the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of some of the world’s greatest ever players by dining in, and walking through, the world-famous Long Room on their way out onto the hallowed turf.
And Herons captain Joe Ellis-Grewal is relishing a home tie.
“Most clubs would prefer to play these types of games at home because you know the ground, dimensions, conditions and where to score gives you an advantage in this competition," he said.
“Hopefully we will have some really strong home support to cheer us on.”
The national stages of the competition sees teams from all over the country pitted against one another and Ellis-Grewal added: “We take this competition really seriously. To be honest with you these games excite us more than the league games where you play the same sides every year.
“Playing against teams that you don’t know, at different grounds in a competition that can take you to Lord’s and be the best club in the country is really exciting so we always take it seriously.”
At this stage in the competition the prospect of a Lord’s final is a big thing for the players and Ellis-Grewal said: “Any opportunity to play at Lord’s is a great one and especially in the National Club Championship as you are there as one of the two best sides in the country.”
Head of Cricket and Operations at MCC, Jamie Cox added: “The standard of competition this year has been really high, I am looking forward to seeing who gets to the final and gets the opportunity to play Lord’s. It is one of the highlights of the cricket season for MCC.
“The prospect of playing at the home of cricket has inspired so many grassroots cricketers and every year we see more players coming through their local sides to play for County teams across the nation which shows just how strong our grassroots game is.”
This year’s final takes place at Lord’s on Saturday September 9. For more information visit lords.org.
