A library and gym in South Woodford has been closed to the public after a structural inspection turned up crumbling concrete. 

South Woodford Library & Gym in High Road was closed on September 5 after reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) was discovered at the site. 

Redbridge Council warned customers of the closure on September 4, reporting that "there is no immediate danger to the structure of the building". 

In its statement, the council confirmed that props would be added to the building "as a precaution".

In an update to this paper, a spokesperson said:  “Inspections are currently taking place, and we await a full report from the contractor regarding the necessary remedial work. 

"As a result, the facilities will remain closed for the time being. 

“Public safety is our top priority, and we have acted swiftly to take precautionary measures to protect gym and library members and staff.

“We understand this facility is a popular place for local people, and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.

"We will provide further information on our website once we know what works are needed and likely timescales for completion.”
