People have been warned to steer clear of a lake after concerns over the safety of the water. 

Tests taken of the water at Fairlop Waters on August 13 have raised concerns over the presence of blue-green algae in the lake. 

Redbridge Council has taken the measure to temporarily suspend water sports on Fairlop Waters whilst it waits for lab results. 

In a statement, the council said: "To protect the health of local people, we have made the decision to temporarily suspend water sports in this lake, and samples have been sent for lab testing.

"We're asking all local people to take note of the suspension, and keep your family and pets away from the water until we have lab results back and we are confident it is safe."

On its website, Vision has also issued an alert in connection to the water. 

It reads: "Alert! We have made the decision to temporarily suspend activities on the lake at Fairlop Waters. We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

According to the Environment Agency, blue-green algae can produce toxins in its blooms. 

People who have come in contact with the toxins can develop rashes and illnesses if the affected water is swallowed.

The toxins can also kill wild animals, pets and livestock. 

Not all blue-green algae blooms contain toxins, but this is not clear until tests have been carried out. 

The council has been contacted for an update on the results.
